"Ode To Stevie Ray" |
written by Susan Jane Kahon vocals by Cathryn Craig |
Acclaimed blues guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan was born in Dallas, Texas on October 3, 1954 and began playing guitar at age 11. A poor student, Vaughan dropped out of high school in 1972 and moved to Austin to pursue a career as a professional musician. After performing with several local bands, Vaughan formed his own R&B band in 1976. Vaughan's big break came in 1982 when Double Trouble performed at the Montreaux Festival in Switzerland and were discovered by David Bowie, who invited Vaughan to perform on his "Let's Dance" album. Record deals followed...Stevie Ray was an amazing guitarist, but struggled with personal difficulties, He was long- addicted to drugs and alchohol, and went into rehab. He then divorced his wife of many years. With his problems behind him , he once again returned to the music he loved. Double Trouble, in 1990 began it's own headlining tour. After an August 27th 1990 performance...with Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy, and Robert Cray at Alpine Valley, Wisconsin, which I attended in southern Wisconsin..Vaughan left for Chicago via helicopter. With the fog rolling in the pilot did not see the side of the hill in Alpine Valley and the chopper slammed into it..I will never forget that night. It was a somber drive back home.I wrote this song shortly thereafter, in 1990..My song for Stevie Ray. Simple but yet it's my song . Tags by Coco Farrell. |
As a Nashville sessions singer, Cathryn Craig has worked and recorded with and for artists as diverse as Mickey Newbury, Bobby Bare, and Shel Silverstein. Along with Tom Paxton, Emmylou Harris, Josh White jr., and Dennis Locorrierre, she sang on Bob Gibson's last ever CD called "Making A Mess.' Her early stage experience was with Bill Medley, where she sang Bobby Hatfield's Righteous Brothers duo parts and she is on the Bill Medley "Sweet Thunder" album. Cathryn also made demo tapes and I found her by accident in the Nashville paper. She has done several of my demo songs for me, including "Ode To Stevie Ray." |
Standing tall.. Guitar blazing bright You played to the noisy crowd... Way into the night Wailing, and crying, Strings on fire You played the blues To stir our hearts desire Mister guitar man Your star was on the rise Noone heard the sounds That filled the lonely skies Wht did you leave so soon? Why couldn't you have stayed.. Why did they claim you then My precious Stevie Ray You stepped into the spotlight Sweat was pouring down The fog was rollin' in In that small midwestern town In a blaze of glory You played that old guitar Until the crowd was cryin' For you to play some more Mister guitar man Your star was on the rise Noone heard the sounds That filled the lonely skies Why did you leave so soon? Why couldn't youhave stayed.. Why did they claim you then My precious Stevie Ray Mister guitar man.. You played your last song...for me. written by Susan Kahon September 1990 God Bless ICYU Recovered: Oct. 22nd, 2023 Some Links & Counters may no longer be Active! |
