From The Poetry Collection Of Susan Jane Kahon |
IN THE POWHATAN TRIBES, A TIME OF WAR OR BATTLE WAS A TIME FOR SORROW, JOY , AND FEAR. MEN LEAVING FOR BATTLE RECEIVED THE BLESSINGS OF THE PRIESTS.WAR DRUMS ACCOMPANIED THEIR LEAVING.WOMEN MOURNED THE LOSS OF THEIR LOVED ONES..AND WAITED FOR THEIR RETURN BY PAINTING THEIR FACES BLACK AND CRYING ALOUD FOR ONE FULL DAY.THIS IS THE TALE OF LITTLE STAR. DEEP IN THE INDIAN FOREST WHERE THE POWHATAN RIVERS FLOW AN INDIAN MAIDEN PLACES STONES IN HER SACRED GARDEN'S ROW THE STONE GARDEN REPRESENTS LITTLE STAR'S HOPES AND DREAMS INSTEAD OF FLOWERS STONES ARE PLACED ALONG THE FLOWING STREAMS HER FACE IS BLACK WITH ASHES SHE WEARS A ROBE OF BLACKENED CLAY SHE CHANTED AS SHE PLACED THE ROCKS THE MIGHTY RIVER CRIED THAT DAY BLACKHEART KNEW SHE CRIED ALOUD FOR HIM HIS BATTLE FIERCE,HE FACED HIS FOE HE WAILED HIS BATTLE CRY AND DREW HIS MIGHTY ARROW SHE TURNED TOWARD WHERE HER WARRIOR FOUGHT HER HEART KNEW HE WAS COMING BACK SHE STEPPED INTO THE RIVER AND REMOVED HER PAINT OF BLACK DEEP IN THE INDIAN FOREST WHERE THE POWHATAN RIVERS FLOW AN INDIAN MAIDEN PLACES STONES IN HER SACRED GARDEN'S ROW. written by Susan Jane Kahon December 9,2001 Recovered: Jan. 18th, 2024 Some Links& Counters may no longer be Active! |
