"Night Rider"
Sung By Elvis Presley
Susan's Poetry In Motion
Elvis's love affair with bikes wasn't a short-lived whim. He bought a Harley Hummer when he first received some of his Sun records money in the mid-fifties. His last ride was two nights before he died in 1977. In between, he owned Harleys, Hondas, Triumphs, and trikes, snowmobiles, shifter carts and almost anything else motorized that one could imagine. Elvis's first bike was a 125cc utilitarian machine that was designed more to be an entry-level bike more than an enthusiast's ride. According to sources, Elvis quickly grew tired of the little two-stroker, and decided to step up to a bigger bike. Of course, it was another Harley.
It was a 1956 Model K, says Marty Rosenbloom, Harley-Davidson's archivist. An 883 cc machine that was to evolve into the Sportster model, Elvis's red machine came at a perfect time to cement his image as a 50's icon. There were a series of photos taken of Elvis Presley on the Model K, in black leather gear. Some say these are the definitive Elvis photos from the early 1950s. Accoeding to Rosenbloom, Elvis ended up giving the bike to a friend to store as he joined the Army after being drafted in 1958. Please enjoy the brilliant graphics, the documentary/bio on the bikes of Elvis, and of course, Coco's graphics.

I'd like to turn back time for us
Instead of ashes, turned to dust
Just to have one single glance
Of Elvis when he did his dance

I wonder if he takes command
If angel really know, this man
Cloaked in heaven's starry shroud
He still rides, his Harley proud

Harley has owned Elvis's bike since the early 90's. when they acquired it from Elvis's pal. There are pictures of it on this page. Harley has traced the numbers back, and has confirmed their bike is the original model Elvis bought and rode. The cycle currently is being stored at Harley's Juneau, Wisconsin archives, and is not currently for public display. Harley recently opened up a Museum in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 2002, and it is a prominent part of Harley's heritage showcase. God Bless All.
